UK Court Jails Two Men Over Alleged China-Linked Surveillance of Hong Kong Activists
A British Border Force agent, Chi Leung “Peter” Wai (40), and his controler, Chung Biu “Bill” Yuen (65), have been imprisoned in Britain for spying on Hong Kong democracy activists on behalf of China. Agent Wai, a former policeman from Britain, misused his position in Heathrow Airport by accessing the classified database of the Home Office to surveil the activists. Yuen, an office manager at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, acted as the channel to the Chinese intelligence service. Wai was given a 10-year imprisonment and Yuen was given an 8-year sentence according to the National Security Act, as declared by Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb because the actions of the two posed a threat to national sovereignty. It was discovered during the probe that the two were surveilling British politicians and targeting famous activists with a reward of $1 million from Hong Kong officials. While Hong Kong officials described the arrests as groundless smearing, UK counter-terrorism police issued a warning.
